And as part of this success we've developed into a dynamic and cosmopolitan institution with a first-class reputation for real-world teaching and ground breaking research.  What's more, our historic tradition of innovative thinking and commercial success means we're widely regarded as one of the UK's most enterprising universities.

The future looks bright for the University of Salford. In 2011 we'll be joining five major BBC departments, including Sport and Children's, at MediaCityUK only a short distance from the University campus. We'll have 100,000 square feet of space filled with state-of-the-art technology right next to the BBC buildings. All parts of the University will be involved in working with the BBC and other tenants to create job opportunities for graduates, and benefit business and the local community.

83% of our research was judged of international class by the Government's latest Research Assessment Exercise. What's more, 12% was judged to be world-leading – at the very cutting edge. Not only does Salford's research directly benefit people's everyday lives, but it also means that our teaching and business partnerships benefit as well.

Just one and a half miles away from Manchester, the University of Salford is right on the doorstep of big-city diversity and fun.

Our world-famous graduates include painter LS Lowry, comedian Peter Kay, actors Sir Ben Kingsley and Christopher Eccleston, and CEO of ASDA, Andy Bond.

Our History

The academic heritage of the University of Salford is founded in the great industrial revolution which originated in the North of England and transformed the world during the Nineteenth Century. Salford contributed to this extraordinary transformation through its internationally renowned engineering and engineers, science and scientists, technologies and technologists.  The University can trace its origins to 1896 and received Royal Charter to become a University in 1967.  It merged with University College Salford in 1996 to become the single institution that makes the University what it is today.

Today, the University has established a successful global presence with a turnover of some £156m, four faculties, 12 schools, nearly 21,000 students, and 2,500 staff - serving the needs of industry and commerce.

Currently undergoing a transformational change affecting every area of university life, Salford is positioning itself at the leading edge of higher education institutions in this country.
