About Us
Transplants are one of the most miraculous achievements of modern medicine. Every year, transplants help save thousands of lives across the UK.
NHSBT ensured that in the last year, over 3500 transplants took place, however there are currently over 10000 people on the transplant waiting list-many of whom tragically will not receive the life saving organ they need.
Principal Activities of NHSBT:
- We fund initiatives to improve donation rates and raise public awareness of the importance of organ donation
- We manage the National Transplant Database and provide a 24 hour service for the matching, allocation and transportation of donated organs
- We actively work with trusts and SHAs nationwide to support the development of a donor champion network.
- We contribute to the development of performance indicators and provide analysis to improve patient care
Over 16 million people in the UK have decided they wish to donate their organs after their death. This is amongst the lowest in Europe. With transplant levels set to increase our challenge is to develop into a service which can save thousands more lives through increasing potential donor numbers and the development and management of stronger, larger donor networks.
Introduction to the Appointment
The Department of Health Organ Donation Taskforce has made a number of recommendations, which we believe will enable us to increase the number of organ transplants by 50% over 5 years. We will achieve this through:
- The systematic removal of barriers to organ donation
- The development of robust donor co-ordination and retrieval arrangements
- Improved promotion and public recognition of organ donation
That’s where you come in. Everything we do has a direct impact on the quality of service experienced by patients. Talented, dedicated people are at the heart of NHSBT – people with the skills and abilities to deliver the major change programme required to meet our objectives; people who understand that our service depends entirely on the generosity of donors and their families.
