Lancaster is a vibrant student-friendly city. Just ten minutes by bus from the University, the city offers a wide choice of pubs, clubs, theatres, markets and shops. The campus is 2 miles from M6 junction 33, within 3 miles of Lancaster railway station (journey time to London is a little over 3 hours) and within one and a half hours of Manchester Airport and the airports at Liverpool and Leeds/Bradford.
Lancaster itself is situated in a delightful part of the north west of England. The rural landscape is superb, with the Lakeland fells in full view across the expanse of Morecambe Bay. The River Lune runs along the edge of the Forest of Bowland, an area of natural beauty, past many villages, into Lancaster and to the sea. Two National Parks, the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, are within a half hour’s drive. The city of Lancaster encompasses three towns, Lancaster, Morecambe and Heysham, as well as a number of villages.
Lancaster is an historic city with a 12th Century castle dominating the hill above the River Lune. It offers excellent shopping, cinemas, theatres and good restaurants, with many well-preserved older buildings and a developing nightlife. In Lancaster, the Dukes Theatre and its Promenade Season provide a wide variety of professional productions to suit all tastes.
A number of thriving amateur dramatics and musical groups regularly stage productions. The Platform in Morecambe and the Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal provide live music, drama and other cultural attractions. The vibrant cities of Manchester and Liverpool European City of Culture 2008 are only one hour away.
There is an excellent choice of accommodation in the ‘travel to’ area which stretches from the Lake District to Preston and east along the Lune valley, as well as Morecambe and Lancaster, offering a range of housing from city centre to rural environments. Housing is varied (from old townhouses to barn conversions and new build) and is competitively priced, especially against similar properties in the South East of England.
The area is well served with state, private and church schools. At secondary education level, Lancaster has outstanding single sex grammar schools, a Church of England and a Catholic 11 – 18 comprehensive school and several 11 – 16 comprehensive schools.
There is a good supply of child-minders registered with the local Social Services department along with a selection of private and state nursery schools, which, in addition to the University’s Pre-School Centre, offers parents a realistic choice in childcare arrangements. Most of the city centre is pedestrianised and in addition to the usual high street retailers, there is a shopping arcade and a large indoor market, which contains a fish market selling fresh local catches from Morecambe Bay. Stroll around the city on a Saturday morning and you will be amazed at the numerous cafes and curiosity shops just waiting to be discovered.
