About us

Hovingham Primary School is a large county primary school situated in the Harehills area of Leeds. We currently have 420 full time pupils and a 52-place nursery. Our building is housed in a purpose-built 2-form entry, semi-open plan, Infant and Junior school building.

The majority of our pupils are from ethnic minorities with over 90% of the children having English as an additional language.

The school is recognised within the community and we actively promote the working relationship between parents and the school.

Our curriculum is manly topic based and structured, showing progression and continuity and the National Curriculum is taught in this way.

We want the best from our children and we believe this is achieved through a partnership between the community and the school

Our Curriculum

We place an emphasis in every year group on the National curriculum core subjects of English, Maths, Science and ICT, alongside History, Geography, Art, PE, Music and RE. We also place importance on Spiritual and Moral Development, Social and Cultural Development and Collective Worship.

In key Stage 1 English, Maths and Science are taught separately with the rest of the curriculum taught through an integrated approach using topics and project led work

Key Stage 2 places continued emphasis on the 3 core subjects with the other National Curriculum subjects taught separately.

Improving Schools Programme (ISP):

ISP is a national strategy implemented by the DCSF. As an ISP school we get extra support from Education Leeds – Literacy and Numeracy Consultants, School Adviser and School Improvement Partner and an ISP Consultant – to help us to raise attainment. Every year group is accountable for every child to make at least average, or accelerated progress with aim of every child reaching age related expectations by the end of each year.  Half-termly pupil progress meetings are held with each Year Group team, in order to identify those children who are not making expected progress. Rigorous tracking systems are in place to enable staff to do this. Assessment for Learning principles underpin our practice and the learning environment is enhanced by the effective use of working walls. A Raising Attainment Plan is written each term, identifying the priorities for improvement – curricular targets are set within this. Subject Leader scrutinise planning and workbooks each half term to ensure that marking and feedback, and that the match of work is right. Lesson observations take place on a regular basis to ensure that the standard of teaching and learning is good or better. Support is always given where needed.  We offer a programme of Continuous Professional Development for all our staff to keep everyone up-to-date with the latest teaching and learning methods.
