Our People

If you are thinking about HMRC as your next employer you might like to read what some of our successful employees think about working here.

Employee 1

Q: Who typically would you describe as your customers?

A: External customers - taxpayers and multi-national corporations.

Q: What do you think are the most useful skills (other than technical skills) to have when working in HMRC?

A: Commercial awareness and to be customer focussed.

Q: Has your experience since joining the organisation matched or differed from what you expected working with HMRC to be like when you applied?

A: It has been an enjoyable experience, work is interesting while not life consuming.

Employee 2

Q: Why did you join HMRC, and what attracted you to your current role?

A: It offered an interesting role with wider application of knowledge than I had previously experienced. It also offered the opportunity to become involved in the issues important to the economic health of Great Britain.

Q: Can you describe the most challenging aspects of your role that you feel you have learnt the most from dealing with?

A: Volume of work. As one of a kind with so many possible customers, managing customer expectations is critical. Understanding Tax Technical issues in sufficient detail to apply commercial and Banking industry technical factors often involves a steep learning curve.

Q: What advice would you give someone just joining HMRC on how to get the most out of their role?

A: Relax and be patient. The academic interest is fascinating and most worthwhile.

Employee 3

Q: How would you describe the environment and culture of HMRC as an employer?

A: Amongst immediate colleagues - very supportive, co-operative and friendly. Wider HMRC - some family friendly policies, as one would expect from the public sector.

Q: Who typically would you describe as your customers?

A: As a full-time manager my customers are mainly people within HMRC - in HR, LBS, the Banking Sector, and also people in my team. Thinking more widely, the external customers that LBS Banking Sector deals with are global banks and other financial institutions based in the UK and elsewhere. These are some of the largest and most important groups in the world. Q: What do you think are the most useful skills (other than technical skills) to have when working in HMRC?
