I was appointed to the above position at HLC on opening in September 2006 having moved from my previous position as second in a PE department at another school.

During my time here, the school has provided me with a variety of opportunities and avenues for continued professional development. At present, I am enrolled on the Leadership Pathways programme through the National College for School Leadership. I am also completing a school-based research project as part of HLC’s work with the Government’s Arts flagship, Creative Partnerships. I’m even being paid to do it!

Aside from the obvious attractions and benefits of our fantastic facilities, I’ve also been impressed with the commitment of the staff and the quality of relationships that adults have with students. The camaraderie within the organisation and the fact that HLC is an integral part of the local community also add to the satisfaction or working here.

As I came to the end of my PGCE in Creative and Performing Arts at Liverpool Hope I heard about a post as Teacher of Dance at HLC. Before interview I took it upon myself to visit the school to see if it really lived up to its billing.

From the moment I set eyes on the place I was wowed by the state of the art facilities and friendly atmosphere amongst staff, particularly within the Faculty of Creative and Performing Arts.

In September 2007 I embarked on my successful NQT year as a teacher of both Dance and Drama and as a Yr 7 Form Tutor. From day one, I have been exposed to challenges and opportunities – life at HLC may be many things, but dull is not one of them.

HLC is a specialist Engineering College, but here the Arts also thrive. At KS3 all students have an hour of Art, Music, Drama and Dance a week and at KS4 I have already had experience of teaching GCSE and BTEC Performing Arts (Dance). It is really great that Dance is taught as a discrete subject and is truly valued and supported by the SLT.

The Faculty system also works well allowing opportunities for all staff to develop their own ideas and projects within a supportive environment. I love the freedom to express my ideas and develop professionally in the knowledge that I can draw on the knowledge and expertise of more experienced staff. We are a strong team who work hard, but also know how to enjoy ourselves on our legendary Faculty Nights Out!

This year I have found myself assuming responsibility for the development of the Dance Department and as timetabled lessons finish at 2.50pm there is ample time for extracurricular activities such as Dance clubs, Community Projects, School Musical, Dance Fest not to mention the Staff Sports on a Friday evening.

HLC offers plenty of opportunities for Professional Development – and there is a supportive NQT programme. I've been on courses to keep my knowledge up to date, accompanied a group to the Outdoor Pursuits Centre at Arthog, triumphed on the annual Wrekin Run ( a 6 mile run up a local hill) and even learnt to cope with the challenge of teaching in the Primary phase of the school!

I would recommend HLC to any aspiring teacher. It's been a steep learning curve! If you want a quiet life, HLC is not for you! However, if you relish a challenge, like to use your initiative and want to develop your skills in a supportive setting and make some really good friends along the way, it might just be the right opportunity for you!
