Doncaster Royal Infirmary & Bassetlaw District General Hospital
The Trust has two Accident & Emergency (A&E) Departments at Doncaster Royal Infirmary (DRI) and BGDH District General Hospital (BDGH) providing a 24 hour, 7 days a week service, with a team of nurses and doctors, who are a motivated, dedicated, multi -skilled workforce. These busy unit’s cover the full range of minor injuries, illness and major trauma for the local population.
The A&E Department’s at DRI & BGDH deal with all types of accident and emergencies including major trauma, both with fully equipped resusitation room and decontamination unit. Each site’s A&E department has two main areas: majors, patients arriving by ambulance and minors, the walking wounded.
There is also a seperate children's treatment room and waiting area with a dedicated nursery nurse and an extra paediatric nurse allocated to the A&E Department.
Patients are assessed by a nurse on arrival, given first aid treatment, anagesia (pain relief) if appropriate, investigation initiated and then given a ' triage ' category to ensure that the most critically ill and injured are seen first. Patients are seen by the doctor in order of priority according to their type and severity of injury or illness.
Waiting times are displayed in the waiting area and staff try to keep these times to a minimum. However, it must be appreciated that at busy times the most seriously ill and injured are seen first and this may cause delays for other patients. The triage nurse in the waiting area and staff working in the main area are available and happy to answer any questions and give advice at any time. Improvements in the service have led to 98% of patients being seen and discharged or admitted within 4 hours.
Over the next year the Department will benefit from the creation of an integrated Unplanned Care Centre and further development of the Acute Emergency and Resuscitation areas. As part of this development, the department will have a separate children’s treatment and play area. The resuscitation area is also being expanded to a six bedded area equipped with the latest technology.
The Emergency Department will have one high dependency cubicle to allow for adequate monitoring of the ill patient. As part of our increased multi-disciplinary working, we are working towards developing interventional assessment teams so that patients arriving by ambulance we have a rapid assessment by a senior clinician to facilitate early decision making and expedite the patients journey through the department. The Middle Grade role will be pivotal to the success of this.
Emergency Nurse Practitioners are an integral part of the department and provide 2 nurses on most shifts. General Practitioners work within the department at evenings and weekends as part of the Emergency team.
The department is very busy and provides excellent exposure to all the range of acute medical, surgical, orthopaedic, paediatric and gynaecological emergencies.
Montagu Hospital
There is also a Nurse led Minor Injuries Unit at Montagu Hospital, Mexborough (MIU). The Minor Injuries Unit provides cover 7 days a week between the hours of 9.00am and 10.00pm.
Approximately 200 Medical, Nursing and Administrative staff work across the three sites.
