About Us

School Location

David Lister School is situated on the eastern edge of the City of Hull and serves an urban/inner-city community consisting of large estates and mostly owned by the City Council and privately owned homes.

The City of Hull is a thriving port, with a population of approximately 300,000 people. The employment base is primarily light industry, together with several large employers such as Reckitt Benckiser, Smith & Nephew, BP and British Aerospace. There are two universities, Hull and Cottingham, and the city offers a rich cultural life. Housing is plentiful in all categories and prices are typically around the national average.

Our location offers easy access to the motorway network, to the east coast, and to the North Yorkshire Moors.

General Information

David Lister School is a maintained co-education comprehensive school, and has approximately 1400 students aged 11-16. In September 2007 David Lister School merged with Isaac Newton School. We currently operate on two sites. The West site has all year groups. The East site has part of Year 11 who were previously at Isaac Newton. We expect this site to close at the end of this academic year.

There are 68 full time equivalent teaching staff, together with a substantial number of non-teaching teaching assistants employed. The Headteacher joined the school in July 2007

Curriculum

A programme of regular and effective transitional activities with our feeder primary schools allows us to group students appropriate to their learning needs and abilities.

In Year 7 and 9 there are 2 bands, of equal abilities, named the ‘Owl’ and the ‘Eagle’ populations. Within these bands students are placed in groupings according to their Key Stage 2 scores and the outcomes from regular assessments. In Year 8 there is only one population. Across all years in Key Stage 3, there is one Nurture group and one Falcon group. These groups support and develop the specific needs of the students. Additionally, there are other basic skills courses provided by the Special Educational Needs Team.

At KS4, students are offered option choices depending upon their preferred career pathway and outcomes at KS3 SATs. There are two main bands named ‘V’ (vocational) and ‘W’ (work related) populations. Students are placed into bands depending upon their ability identified by KS2/3 SATs.

Within ‘V’ population students core entitlement is met in addition to an option to pursue a vocational course or a more academic curriculum (History, Geography, French and Business). Within ‘W’ population students core entitlement is met in addition to a full day’s work related option.

Students with special needs are supported by a key-skills led curriculum, developed by a specialist team. Students with additional needs follow a very individualised programme, some of which is delivered by external providers.

The school is presently working closely with the LA on a programme ‘Study Plus’. This is designed to support the development of Literacy and Numeracy skills for students who are at risk of achieving a ‘C’ grade for Mathematics and/or English. All students are expected to complete a 2 week’s work experience placement in Year 11.
