A message on behalf of CoRWM’s sponsor Ministers.

Dear Applicant

Thank you for your interest in the role of Chair of the Committee on Radioactive Waste Management (CoRWM).

The management of higher activity radioactive waste presents Government with significant challenges. We need to address legitimate public concerns and build confidence in the long-term solutions we adopt. How we deal with waste has  implications not only for public and environmental safely but also for the future security of our energy supplies.

CoRWM has a vital role to play. By providing independent scrutiny of Government policy and implementation plans, the Committee ensures that the UK’s radioactive waste management programmes benefit from the advice of internationally recognised experts. CoRWM also plays an essential role in demonstrating the Government’s commitment to transparency and use of evidence in guiding radioactive waste policy. In so doing it also helps to engender greater public understanding and trust.

As Chair you would lead the Committee in providing Government Ministers with advice and help to shape our programmes as they are implemented. The successful applicant would be expected to work closely with me and Ministerial colleagues as we further develop the Government’s response to the considerable challenge of achieving a long term solution to managing the UK’s radioactive waste.
