A brief description and history of the school.

Beeston Primary School is a large primary school situated in  South Leeds. We have 380 full-time pupils and a 39 place Nursery. The school building is semi-open plan but the accommodation also includes three outside, modular, buildings and an external Nursery unit. As part of the provision for Extended School, in addition to the extended day and flexible hours in the Nursery we have a Breakfast Club and ‘Happy Hours’ After School Care provision.
The school is recognised as a High Achieving school and offer a Broad and Balanced curriculum. The ethos is to make learning fun. Currently we hold the Arts-Mark Gold award and are also part of the sports partnership. The school are also committed to being part of the Healthy schools network.

The school has close links, academic and sporting, with local High Schools and close links are maintained around Transition. The school also enjoys good and close communications with the local community, including local churches.

The school aims to provide a welcoming, happy, secure environment which will stimulate intellectual curiosity and an eagerness for lifelong learning. We value Sport and Music and the Creative Arts as essential elements of our school. We want the best for our children and we believe that this is achieved through a partnership between school, home and the wider community to whom the school is accountable.

Key Aims of the School

The school will

  • We aim to develop an understanding within each child of his or her value in the school and the wider world, appreciating that everyone is special.
  • We aim to enable every child to enjoy and achieve well at Crow Lane by ensuring each child receives its entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum, addressing all areas of experience.
  • We will provide opportunities for children to develop the essential skills of communication, observation, Numeracy, creativity, mobility, sociability and an ability to solve problems. We further recognise that staying healthy and safe in our modern world is also an essential skill.
  • We appreciate and value parental involvement in their children’s education and aim to continue and develop our positive home/school links.
  • We aim to develop confidence and a love of learning within each child.
  • We are committed to high achievement for all: so that each child, across the full range of ability, progresses to their full potential and is able to achieve economic independence.
  • We aim to develop a sensitivity within each child to the needs of others, a growing awareness of the wider world and an ability to make a positive contribution to society.
  • We aim to develop a sense of responsibility and guardianship within the children towards the physical world and the environment.

What are the children taught?

Like other schools, Beeston Primary School has to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum.  Mathematics, English, Science, RE and ICT (computers) are the core subjects.  History, Geography, Design Technology, Art, Music, Personal Social Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE) and Physical Education are the foundation subjects.  In the Foundation Stage Unit children follow the Foundation Curriculum.

Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 lay the foundations for future learning by developing basic skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening as well as introducing the children to the content spanning all the subjects of the curriculum and promoting positive attitudes to learning.  A crucial part of the learning is to ensure children develop their personal and social skills.  Much of this is done through the medium of play.  In Key Stage 2 as well as continuing the work begun in Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 children consolidate basic skills spending more time studying science and acquiring the specific knowledge of other foundation subjects.

Religious Education and Collective Worship

The school is a primary school with no religious affiliation:  Collective Worship is held daily and is of a broadly Christian nature whilst acknowledging that we live in a multi-cultural society and giving the children insight into other religions and customs.
